Цели:
Учебно-методические:
активизация материала по теме «People and Society”, совершенствование навыков говорения и чтения, умение использовать прочитанное в речи, умение выбирать в тексте нужную информацию.
Образовательные:
расширение лингвистического кругозора, развитие познавательного интереса к истории, формирование потребностей в приобретении новых знаний об истории своей страны и общественных организациях мира.
Воспитательные:
воспитание уважения к людям, внесшим значительный вклад в политику мира, воспитание уважения к прошлому и настоящему своей страны.
Задачи:
Активизировать учащихся в употреблении в речи тематического языкового материала,
научить давать определения понятиям, развивать познавательный интерес и умение делать выводы, развивать умение быстро ориентироваться в тексте с целью выявления нужной информации.
Оборудование урока: магнитофон, проектор, карты СССР, России и Европы ,доска, раздаточный материал, ноутбук.
Ход урока
1 Организационный момент
Приветствие учителя и знакомство с темой урока
ll Основная часть урока.
Today we are going to speak about the period in the History of our country, when Mikhail Gorbachev became General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
We begin with the work over the words and expressions on the topic “People and Society”.
1. Give the equivalents to these words from the topical vocabulary:
a) To come out from behind of smth- (to emerge)
b) Urgent need for smth- (emergency)
c) To do smth with smb- (to deal with)
d) To tell exactly who a person is- (to identify)
e) Coming at the beginning- (initial)
f) To join together- (to unite)
g) To be not satisfied with smth- (discontented)
2. Explain the words in English. Give the definitions and use them in your own sentences:
a) Dramatic- (sudden and surprising change).
b) To inherit-(to receive the property or money of a person who has died).
c) To flourish-(to develop well)
d) To restrict- (to keep within certain limits)
e) Collapse- (a situation in which smth fails or stops existing)
f) Proposal- (a plan or suggestion, an offer of marriage)
g) Significance- (special value, importance)
h) To reveal- (to open the truth)
i) To comprise- (to include)
j) A shortcoming- (a fail or defect)
lll Look at the screen. There are differences in using words JOIN and UNITE:
JOIN-means to become a member of a group:
To join the army
To come together with other people:
To join smb for dinner
To connect things:
To join wires, to join hands
UNITE-means to join together to achieve a particular aim, to work together:
To unite groups, to unite nations.

Another pair of words POLICY and POLITICS
POLICY is a plan of action, a set of ideas that is used as basis for making decisions
Ex/: policy on immigration
To pursue a policy
School’s policy
A lot of newspapers write about home and foreign policy of states.
Honesty is the best policy.
POLITICS is used both as singular and plural
1. Singular-means political affairs or life:
Local politics
To go into politics
To talk politics
Politics makes a serious influence on every person’s life but he seldom thinks about it.
2. Plural-a person’s beliefs about how government should work.
His politics are becoming more conservative.
My father is much interested in politics.

IV The main item of our lesson is reading and discussing the text about the events in our country
when Mikhail Gorbachev was General Secretary. At the same time we listen to the text and follow the pronunciation.
After the reading you should put the sentences before the text in the right order.

V. Look through the text again and say how the following ideas are expressed in it: ex 36 p.90
VI Find in the text “The Cold War and Beyond” English equivalents for the following words and word combinations. Read out the sentences with them. Ex.37 p.90
VII Now answer the questions:
1. What was the role of Mikhail Gorbachev in reforming the Soviet Union?
(He was the leader of the Soviet Union. He started the process of economic and political change. He improved the relations with other countries. He stopped the cold war.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.
2. How did the two superpowers – the USSR and the USA- bring the cold war to the end?
Two leaders M. Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, US President first met in Geneva in 1985 for their first summit, then for the second time in Reykjavik in 1986. . At this meeting Gorbachev offered dramatic cuts to nuclear weapons. Both leaders signed the Intermediate Nuclear Force Treaty. Since then the relations between the USSR and the USA became warmer.
3. Look at the first map and show the borders of the Soviet Union.
The first map shows that Russia bordered on Finland, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and China. It was the big state comprising 15 Socialist Republics.
The second map shows that there are no more Soviet Socialist Republics. They became
Independent states.
The third map shows that many Eastern European countries were socialist republics. For example Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia..
The forth map shows that these countries stopped being republics and divided:
Czechoslovakia divided into Czech republic and Slovakia, Yugoslavia divided into several states.
4. Now, let’s speak about the United Nations Organization.
It’s the international organization that almost every country in the world belongs to. It was established in 1945 to try to find peaceful solutions to international problems and to make sure that countries work together to find peace. Then it included 50 nations. They worked out their
First document – the instrument of the organization – the United Nations Charter. The General Secretary is elected at the General Assembly. Now The General Secretary is Kofi Atta Annan.
The Headquarters are in New York.
1. The United Nations comprises: the General Assembly, where all UNO members are represented. Today the UNO comprises 186 member states.
2. Security Council which is responsible for making sure that countries behave peacefully towards each other. The council decide what should do if countries go to war. It is a committee of 5 permanent members (the USA, the UK, Russia, France, and China) and 10 other members who change every 2 years.
3. UNESCO- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization- provides support in education, science and culture especially for poorer countries.
4. UNISEF-United Nations International Children’s Fund- helps children in the world suffering from diseases and hunger.
The other organizations that belong to the UNO are: World Bank, World Health Organization and the Supreme Court.
5. Work in pairs. Develop the idea and complete the story: ex. 34 p.88.
6. Now the task in National Examination Format:
You and your friends have been asked to make a talk on a statesman or apolitical leader. Discuss which of these people to choose for your talk
